What to Expect During CNA Training in Albuquerque: A Week-by-Week Guide

6 min read·Published April 20, 2026·Universal Care CNA Training

Curious about what happens inside a CNA training program? Here's an honest, week-by-week look at what students experience during Universal Care's 4-week program in Albuquerque.

Starting CNA Training: What the First Day Is Like

Walking into CNA training for the first time can feel overwhelming — but at Universal Care, we design the first day to ease you in. You'll meet your classmates (class sizes are intentionally small for personalized attention), receive your course materials, and get a clear overview of what the 4-week program covers and what you need to do to succeed.

One thing students consistently tell us: the first day feels much less intimidating than they expected. Our bilingual staff ensures that both English and Spanish-speaking students feel comfortable from day one.

Week 1: Foundations of Patient Care

The first week focuses on the theoretical foundations you'll build on throughout the program:

  • Healthcare system overview — understanding the roles of CNAs, LPNs, RNs, and other team members
  • Patient rights and dignity — HIPAA, resident rights in long-term care, ethical responsibilities
  • Infection control — hand hygiene, PPE, standard precautions, isolation procedures
  • Body mechanics and safety — proper lifting techniques to protect yourself and patients
  • Communication skills — verbal and written reporting, working with diverse patient populations

By the end of Week 1, you'll understand the professional and ethical framework of nursing assistant practice and have started your first skills lab sessions.

Week 2: Personal Care and Basic Nursing Skills

Week 2 is where the hands-on work really begins. You'll spend significant time in the skills lab practicing:

  • Bathing, grooming, and oral hygiene
  • Dressing and undressing patients with limited mobility
  • Perineal care and catheter care
  • Measuring vital signs: blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation
  • Measuring height and weight
  • Positioning patients in bed and using assistive devices

This week can feel intense because there's a lot to absorb. The key is repetition — practice each skill until the steps feel automatic.

Week 3: CPR/AED/BLS, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens

Week 3 is when students complete their CPR/AED/BLS certification, First Aid training, and Blood Borne Pathogens training — all included in your Universal Care tuition at no extra cost.

The CPR/AED/BLS course covers:

  • Adult, child, and infant CPR techniques
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) operation
  • Basic Life Support protocols for healthcare providers
  • Choking response for conscious and unconscious patients

The Blood Borne Pathogens training covers OSHA-required content on HIV, Hepatitis B and C, exposure prevention, and post-exposure procedures — essential knowledge for any healthcare worker.

Week 4: Exam Prep and Clinical Review

The final week is dedicated to exam preparation. Instructors conduct targeted review sessions covering the content areas most heavily tested on the New Mexico CNA state exam. You'll:

  • Complete full practice written exams under timed conditions
  • Perform skills demonstrations in front of instructors using the official Prometric checklists
  • Receive personalized feedback on your weakest areas
  • Learn test-taking strategies for the multiple-choice knowledge exam
  • Complete all required paperwork for state exam registration

Scheduling Your State Exam

Upon completing the program, you'll receive your training completion certificate and can register for the New Mexico CNA state exam through Prometric. Most students schedule their exam within 1–2 weeks of program completion while the material is fresh.

Morning vs. Evening Classes: Which Is Right for You?

Universal Care offers two daily schedules to fit your life:

  • Morning Classes: 9am–2pm, Monday–Friday — ideal for parents, evening workers, or those who prefer daytime learning
  • Evening Classes: 5pm–9pm, Monday–Friday — perfect for people who work during the day or have daytime obligations

Both schedules cover identical curriculum and lead to the same state certification. New cohorts start every month, so you can begin when it's right for you.
