The New Mexico CNA state exam has two parts โ written and skills. Here's everything you need to know to pass on your first attempt, from a program that prepares students right here in Albuquerque.
Understanding the New Mexico CNA State Certification Exam
The New Mexico Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) state exam is administered by Prometric on behalf of the New Mexico Board of Nursing. It consists of two components: a written (or oral) knowledge test and a hands-on skills evaluation. Both must be passed to receive your CNA certification.
Part 1: The Written Knowledge Test
The written exam contains 70 multiple-choice questions, with 60 scored questions and 10 unscored pilot questions. You have 90 minutes to complete it. The exam covers these core content areas:
- Member of the Health Care Team (16%) โ communication, reporting, legal and ethical issues
- Promotion of Safety (19%) โ infection control, emergency procedures, body mechanics
- Promotion of Function and Health of Residents (17%) โ personal care, nutrition, elimination
- Basic Nursing Skills (25%) โ vital signs, positioning, range of motion
- Restorative Skills (8%) โ rehabilitation, assistive devices
- Cognitive Impairment (8%) โ dementia care, behavior management
- Emotional and Mental Health Needs (7%) โ patient rights, psychosocial needs
Part 2: The Skills Evaluation
During the skills portion, you will be asked to demonstrate 5 randomly selected nursing skills in front of a trained evaluator. One of the five skills is always Hand Washing. The other four are drawn from a pool of approximately 25 skills.
Common skills tested include:
- Measuring and recording vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature)
- Providing personal hygiene (oral care, perineal care, bathing)
- Positioning and transferring patients
- Applying elastic stockings
- Providing range-of-motion exercises
- Feeding a patient
Top Study Tips from Universal Care Instructors
1. Practice Skills Until They Are Automatic
The skills evaluation is pass/fail based on a detailed checklist. Evaluators mark whether you performed each step in the correct order. Practice each skill at least 10โ15 times until the sequence is completely natural. At Universal Care, we dedicate significant lab time to skills practice for exactly this reason.
2. Focus on Infection Control in Every Skill
Infection control steps โ washing hands, using gloves, maintaining clean vs. dirty fields โ appear in nearly every skill checklist. Missing these steps is one of the most common reasons students fail. Always begin and end with proper hand hygiene.
3. Use the Prometric Candidate Handbook
Download the official New Mexico Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook from the Prometric website. It contains the exact skills checklists used by evaluators. Study from the official source, not just textbooks.
4. Take Practice Tests
Multiple free and paid CNA practice test resources are available online. Aim to score consistently above 80% on practice tests before your exam date. Focus extra time on your weakest content areas.
5. Get Enough Sleep Before Exam Day
Cognitive performance drops significantly with sleep deprivation. Plan to get 7โ8 hours of sleep the night before your exam. Arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes early with two forms of valid ID.
What to Bring to the NM CNA Exam
- Two forms of valid, unexpired identification (one must be government-issued with photo)
- Your Authorization to Test (ATT) letter from Prometric
- Comfortable, professional clothing (you will be performing physical skills)
- Watch with a second hand for pulse/respiration measurements
What Happens If You Don't Pass?
If you fail one or both parts of the exam, you may retake the failed portion(s) up to three times within two years of completing your training program. After three attempts, you must repeat the full CNA training program before testing again.
