CNA Certification Requirements in New Mexico: Everything You Need to Know

7 min read·Published April 12, 2026·Universal Care CNA Training

Before you can work as a CNA in New Mexico, you need to meet specific state requirements. Here's a complete breakdown of everything required to get and keep your NM CNA certification.

New Mexico CNA Certification: The Basics

In New Mexico, Certified Nursing Assistants are regulated by the New Mexico Board of Nursing. To legally work as a CNA in a licensed healthcare facility in New Mexico, you must be listed on the New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry (NMNNAR). Here's exactly what that requires.

Step 1: Complete a State-Approved CNA Training Program

New Mexico requires all CNA candidates to complete a state-approved training program that meets the federal minimum of 75 training hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical experience. Many programs, including Universal Care's, exceed this minimum to better prepare students for the state exam and real-world patient care.

Universal Care's 4-week program in Albuquerque is fully state-approved by the New Mexico Board of Nursing and meets all federal and state training requirements.

Step 2: Pass a Criminal Background Check

All CNA candidates in New Mexico must pass a criminal background check before being placed on the Nurse Aide Registry. Certain criminal convictions may disqualify a candidate from CNA certification. Common disqualifying offenses include:

  • Abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a vulnerable adult or child
  • Theft or fraud involving a healthcare patient or employer
  • Certain drug-related felonies

If you have a prior criminal record and are concerned about eligibility, contact the New Mexico Board of Nursing directly to discuss your specific situation before enrolling in a training program.

Step 3: Register for and Pass the State Exam

After completing your training program, your school will submit your eligibility to Prometric, the testing vendor for New Mexico. You'll receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter by email. The exam has two parts:

  • Written Knowledge Test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes
  • Skills Evaluation: 5 randomly selected nursing skills demonstrated in front of an evaluator

Both parts must be passed to receive your certification. Exam fees are paid directly to Prometric at the time of registration.

Step 4: Get Listed on the NM Nurse Aide Registry

Upon passing both portions of the exam, your name will be added to the New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry. Employers are required by law to verify that all CNAs they hire are listed on the registry before employment begins. You can verify your registry status at any time through the New Mexico Board of Nursing website.

CNA Certification Renewal in New Mexico

New Mexico CNA certifications must be renewed every two years. To renew, you must:

  • Have worked at least 8 hours as a paid CNA during the two-year renewal period
  • Submit a renewal application to the New Mexico Board of Nursing
  • Pay the renewal fee

If you have not worked as a CNA for more than 24 consecutive months, you may be required to complete a refresher training program before your certification can be renewed.

Reciprocity: Moving to New Mexico with an Out-of-State CNA Certification

If you are already certified as a CNA in another state and move to New Mexico, you may be eligible for reciprocity — meaning your out-of-state certification can be transferred to New Mexico without retaking the full exam. Contact the New Mexico Board of Nursing to initiate the reciprocity process and verify your eligibility.

How Long Does the Entire Process Take?

From starting training to receiving your New Mexico CNA certification, most students complete the process in approximately 6–8 weeks:

  • Training program: 4 weeks (at Universal Care)
  • Exam registration and scheduling: 1–2 weeks
  • Exam results and registry listing: 1–2 weeks
